good day. I had put up a refilling station here in our locality in one of the cities of Philippines.I had already complied w/ the gov't.needed documentation requirements and franchise payment to one of the major players here in the country however when I Finally go over the franchise agreement it didn't conform w/ our verbal agreement prior to the implementation of the structure and all the development required of a station.. the problem arises now is that the company requires me of a huge volume of sales quota per month (assorted liters sold) which to my own study could not meet the volume required of as based on my experienced w/ other companies before.my proposal is if I could go on a generic operation without entering into a franchising scheme. please advice me of what are the advantage on my part since I've already invested all my last centavo into this venture. God Bless...

Hi there! My husband and I are planning to open a gas station/car wash/ mini mart in Tacloban City, Philippines. We are newbies and we need some advice in how to go about it. We are thinking of entering into a franchise agreement for the filling station... and if so, how much does it usually cost? Also, how much bond is required for the fuel supply? We have found a good location and still in need of drafting a business plan. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

  • John S. Salvadora beginner adviser said on September 8, 2011
@JESS LEE, Sales quota is the matrix that makes branded/international petroleum company get to survive the highly competitive market. They tend to pass this to their franchisee. The thing about a service station is that it is dependent on the traffic. If you have many competitors along the vicinity, you would normally share the market with them. I therefore suggest that you expand your marketing strategy by going around your city or adjacent cities to scout for on-going construction projects as and offer them supply and delivery of fuel. Construction projects needs a lot of fuel for their delivery trucks, generators and service vehicles. The pricing of which would be higher because you are going to have it delivered to them. For this though, you would need several barrels with which to deliver the fuel. You need to have a drop side truck as well.

You cannot just simply dump your franchise, lest you would be fined for unilateral rescission of contract. Going generic on fuel can be a bit tricky as you have to source fuel from different supplier whose fuel products may not be similarly produced or may have used different additives. Anyway, you can have separate dispensers for them. Good luck. JOHN S. SALVADORA johnsarciasalvadora@yahoo.com

@ZHERNA, Bonds may vary from 10 million to 30 million, depending on the projected sale and/or fuel requirement of your service station. This is exclusive of the initial investment which could peak to 50 million (if you need to buy/rent a parcel of land) for a sizable service station or at mere 10 million (if you own the land) and the service station you want to put up is lesser than 200 square meters. You need to appreciate that branded petroleum companies (Shell, Chevron, Petron) have strict branding protocols. They'll be the one to construct the station, through their certified/accredited construction firm because it has to suit the design of the company. The underground fuel tanks, dispensers, pos and other system are not cheap as they are of the highest standards. Good luck, JOHN S. SALVADORA

  • John S. Salvadora beginner adviser said on September 14, 2011
@Astraf. It is interesting to note that indeed, Singapore has a small and precious land area. However, this shouldn't be a problem in establishing a service station. to maximize space, you can have your underground fuel tank (ugt) for gasoline (e-10/e-15) and diesel (leaded/unleaded) installed close together and have your fuel dispenser machine installed beneath the ground as well wherein the fuel pump hose could be designed to be attached to the canopy. the floor area therefore is open for traffic wherein your attendants can pull down the nozzle when filing a vehicle.

I would like to point out when starting a petrol station, one of the most import investments will be your POS/Forecourt management software. Without this it is very difficult to keep track of what is happening on your forecourt. For more information on this you can contact me on +27 84 5688251 or e-mail me: jonathan@stowe.co.za. Our software is currently being used on BP, sasol and some Engen sites in South Africa, as well as Puma sites in Sub Saharan Africa.

i am a gas station owner since last 2 years, i own an esso in canada ontario. i took me 4 months of calculations and home work to buy one. But honestly after spending 2 years in the trade its a hard trade , all my family is working at the gas station we have a coffee shop and a lil restaurant there i would honestly advice you not to get in to this business because if you calculate the time and effort and the money you will put in it doesn't really pays u back accordingly. think before you take a big step. because you are talking about millions and at least 50,000 + cash to run the business , one wrong calculation can shut your business off. and all you earn is 2 cents a liter that's pretty much it + the store sales. so be careful do your calculations first.

@Reynaldo V. Diaz, before you even try to come up with a Business Plan, you should first have a Feasibility Study. Feasibility study would enable you to determine the viability of the filling station which you want to put up. It the feasibility study points to a positive direction, the you can prepare your business plan by incorporating salient features of your feasibility study into it. this is all a matter of marketing. You have to determine first the soundness of your market and ascertain your capacity.
